NPP Raises Concerns Over Remand of Salomey Awiti Bafoh

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed serious concerns over the continued detention of Madam Salomey Awiti Bafoh, a principal nursing officer and mother of three, following her remand by the Adenta Circuit Court.

In a statement dated September 18, 2026, the NPP said Madam Bafoh was reportedly arrested in Techiman and brought to Accra after being held incommunicado for several days. The Party noted that when she first appeared before the court on September 16, the prosecution reportedly alleged that she was linked to the “Ghana Jollof” social-media account and was being investigated in connection with an alleged plot to overthrow the Government. The following day, however, the prosecution presented a charge of abetment of publication of false news under Sections 20(1) and 208 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

The NPP said the change in the prosecution’s allegations raises questions about the basis for Madam Bafoh’s continued detention. The Party further questioned the territorial jurisdiction of the Adenta Circuit Court, given that Madam Bafoh resides in Techiman, and called for clarity on the specific act alleged to have occurred within the court’s jurisdiction.

The Party also raised concerns about what it described as an emerging pattern involving politically sensitive cases concerning social-media commentators and critics of Government appearing before the same court. While affirming respect for the constitutional independence of the Judiciary, the NPP stressed the importance of impartiality, fairness and adherence to due process.

The NPP has consequently called for an immediate review of Madam Bafoh’s continued detention and her admission to reasonable bail. It has also called on the prosecution to establish the legal and territorial basis for the charge, while urging that her constitutional rights, including personal liberty, presumption of innocence and the right to a fair trial, be fully respected.

The Party further called on the Chief Justice and Judicial Council to take note of concerns surrounding the handling of politically sensitive cases before the Adenta Circuit Court and urged Government and security agencies to respect the rights of citizens who criticise those in power.

The court case itself remains ongoing. Media reports published on September 18 indicate that Madam Bafoh has pleaded not guilty to the alleged offence and is expected to reappear before the court on September 30, 2026.

Sustainable Resilience

Beyond connectivity, the plan emphasizes ecological stewardship. By integrating smart-grid technology with regional solar arrays, the goal is to achieve energy independence while reducing the national carbon footprint by 30% over the next decade. The ripple effect on the manufacturing sector is expected to be profound, as lowered energy costs attract high-tech production.
