The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has staged a demonstration in Accra under the slogan “Yɛgye Yɛ Sika”, demanding accountability from the government over public expenditure on the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa and concerns surrounding the issuance of diplomatic and service passports.
The demonstration, held on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, brought together party members, youth activists and supporters who marched to draw national attention to what the Party describes as unanswered questions about the management of public funds and official documents.
The procession began around the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange area before proceeding to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Jubilee House, where the demonstrators sought to present their concerns to the relevant authorities.
NPP Demands Answers Over South Africa Evacuation Expenditure
A major focus of the demonstration was the government’s evacuation of 1,964 Ghanaians from South Africa following reports of renewed xenophobic attacks and intimidation.
The NPP is demanding a detailed account of the expenditure associated with the exercise, particularly the reported GH¢16.4 million discrepancy that the Party says requires clarification.
The Party is calling for the publication of original invoices, contracts and proof of payment for chartered flights used during the evacuation. It is also demanding the release of the complete passenger manifest and beneficiary list to enable the public to verify the number of people evacuated and establish how the funds were disbursed.
Additionally, the NPP is calling for an independent audit of the exercise to determine the accuracy of the financial records and identify any irregularities that may have occurred.
The Party maintains that public resources must be managed transparently and that Ghanaians deserve clear answers on how their money is spent.
Questions Over Diplomatic and Service Passports
The demonstration also drew attention to concerns about the issuance of diplomatic and service passports.
The NPP is demanding the publication of details of all diplomatic and service passports issued since January 2025, including the eligibility status of recipients and the authorities responsible for approving the documents.
The Party is further calling for the cancellation of any passports found, following due process, to have been issued contrary to the applicable rules and regulations.
According to the NPP, the proper management of official travel documents is essential to protecting the integrity of Ghana’s institutions and ensuring that such privileges are granted in accordance with the law.
Calls for Action Against Responsible Officials
The Party has called for the removal of Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and investigations by the appropriate state institutions into the concerns raised.
It is also demanding that any individuals found culpable through a fair and credible investigation be held accountable under the law.
The allegations raised by the NPP remain matters requiring investigation and verification. The Party says its demands are intended to ensure that the relevant authorities provide answers and establish the facts surrounding the expenditure and passport-related concerns.
NPP Gives Government 14 Days to Respond
In a further development, the NPP has given President John Dramani Mahama 14 days to act on the issues raised during the demonstration.
National Youth Organiser Abanga Fuseini Yakubu indicated that the Party would consider further action if its concerns were not addressed within the stipulated period.
The position reinforces the Party’s demand for a clear response from the government and concrete steps to address the questions surrounding public expenditure and official documentation.
A Call for Transparency and Accountability
The “Yɛgye Yɛ Sika” demonstration forms part of the NPP’s broader call for transparency, responsible management of public resources and accountability from public officials.
The Party maintains that citizens have a right to understand how public funds are utilised and to expect state institutions to investigate credible concerns without fear or favour.
As the NPP awaits a response from the government, it insists that the issues raised must be addressed through transparent disclosure, independent scrutiny and appropriate action wherever wrongdoing is established.
For the NPP, the message of the demonstration is clear: public resources belong to the people, and public officials must be prepared to account for decisions taken in their name.
